Characters Name: Takane Enomoto
Age: 17
Canon: Kagerou Days
Canon Point: Early August of her second year in high school.
Species: Human
Gender: Female
Orientation: Seeing as she has a crush on Haruka, it’s probably right to assume that she’s heterosexual.
Appearance: Here! She’s kind of short and really skinny and has no breasts. She’s also a loser who cuts her hair into ponytails.
Personality: Constantly scowling at the bustling crowds of people who have managed to make friends and lead normal lives, Takane is a very grumpy and bitter person. Almost constantly, she can be seen walking around and drowning out the world with her precious one and only partner, her headphones. When spoken to directly, she often comes off as angry, and easily scares the most faint hearted away from her. Her eyes, always having bags under them, and always looking angry, are never the most pleasant to look into. Although she can sometimes put on a smile and be enthusiastic about something, she usually just looks really scary when she does it. At home, she is usually seen with the same expression, playing her favorite game (DEAD BULLET -1989-) all night long.
In reality though, Takane really doesn’t want to be any of these things. Truth be told, she’s always wished that she could be a carefree prankster who never stops smiling. Throughout her entire life, she’s had a mysterious illness that has caused her to randomly lose consciousness during any situation. Because of this, she’s spent a lot of time in the hospital, and even has to take a special needs class to monitor her condition. Although it’s by no means life threatening, it’s a really big bother. Always, she’s just wanted to be a normal kid who has a friendly disposition and doesn’t fall asleep in the middle of conversations. She yearns for friends, and people that she can talk to without a problem. She’s surprisingly timid around strangers, and even when she tries to act friendly, it often just comes off as forced. It doesn’t help that she has little patience for anything, because she’s always tired. Also because of her illness, she’s almost completely incapable of getting restful sleep. Even if she’s slept for eleven hours, she never wakes up with that refreshed feeling that everyone talks about. Because of this, she’s always moody, even when she truly wishes that she weren’t.
Haruka Kokonose, one of her only true friends, is the only one who doesn’t seem to mind when she’s cranky. Although he’s pathetic and gets scared easily, he seems to accept her simply for who she is. Although she’s had friends before this, none of them have treated her like she’s a normal person the way he does. They’ve always treated her carefully, and seemed to always be in a completely different world from her. Perhaps because he also dealt with illness his entire life, or just because of his personality, he never treated her this way, and she appreciates it a lot more than she lets on. Although she’s very stubborn when it comes to him, she’s constantly trying her hardest to make sure that they stay friends, and that he doesn’t come to regard her as “weird”. More than anything, she doesn’t want to lose his friendship. She keeps her obsession for games a secret from him, fearing that he’ll think that she’s gross and will start to hate her. However, when it comes out, he’s nothing but rainbows, excitedly exclaiming “Takane! You’re so cool!” And causing her heart to flutter for some reason. Although she disregards it whenever she thinks about it, and avoids thinking about what it is, over the year and a half that she has to get to know him, she’s slowly developing feelings for him, much to her dismay. However, still hasn’t fully realized it at this point in her canon.
Prone to tears and immense embarrassment over small things, Takane is also surprisingly careful of appearances. Although she doesn’t often dress to impress, she obviously has her own idea of fashion and being “cute.” Her skirt is rolled up above her knees, and she wears leggings beneath. She also tries her best to use a “cute” voice when trying to impress strangers, but it never seems to work for someone reason! As mentioned earlier, she wants nothing more than friends and a normal life. Although she knows she’ll never have that, she tries her very best. This is also the reason she loses herself in games. Because, no matter who you are and what kind of life you lead, you can always be a hero. No exceptions. Games are her constant companion, and she’s very serious about them. She’s even placed second in the DEAD BULLET -1989- tournament, and aims for first. She’s extraordinarily embarrassed about her gaming life, though, miserably proclaiming herself a chuunibyou and often wishing she could delete her account and die if discovered.
To conclude, Takane is your average teenage girl of seventeen. She’s obsessed with videogames, wants to make friends, and gets cranky very easily. She’s sensitive about what other people think about her. but tries not to care at the same time. Despite being sick, she wants more than anything to be, well, normal. And even though she’s found herself caring deeply for a classmate, she doesn’t let that undo her and change who she is. She thinks that being lonely is very scary, but she tries her best to be strong and independant, so that in her own way, she can consider herself a “hero” like in the stories, and not just some sick loser.
Abilities: Takane doesn’t have any special powers at this point in the canon. She’s mortal just like everyone else in her world. And as far as her everyday talents, she’s really good at playing video games. She rarely loses a game, and when she does, she’s extraordinarily impressed. (And distressed.) Other than that, she’s legitimately not even good at sleeping.
Other: Judging from her symptoms, it seems like Takane has narcolepsy. This will likely be cured, but I’d like to keep the sleepy nature of her illness. Although she will no longer experience sleeping spells, she will still have trouble getting restful sleep, and will often be tired and cranky as a result.
SAMPLES
First Person: Is there an arcade here?
[Straight and to the point. Takane’s face is shadowed a little bit by her bangs, giving her quite an embarrassed expression, but there’s a flicker in her gaze as well. She can do this. She can speak over the network without completely embarrassing herself. She can be like everyone else.]
Life is a little boring without video games, don’t you think?
[Yes, relate with the audience! Like this, she might even make friends. Or maybe someone will see her on the network and suddenly develop a silly crush on her! That would be great. --...No, who is she kidding? That’s awful. What a horrible, sinful, hopeless woman she is. Her previously falsely confident face crumples into a pathetic, humiliated one. This is already on the network, isn’t it...
Takane’s eyes seem to say that she’s praying that some deity in the sky would strike her down at that second.]
Third Person: “Uwaaah, this can't be real, right?”
There was an extremely depressed girl kneeling in front of the housing gate. She was holding her head in distress and squirming a little, while occasionally muttering strange things. This can't be real. This is a dream. Is someone pranking her? Etc. The usual things heard around this time of the month in Holly Heights.
Game start.
Option A: This was a dream.
On her way to the housing gate, Takane had tripped over several things and was now sporting bruises all over her calves. At that point, she had even pinched herself. By that logic, she would have woken up already, right? There was absolutely no way this was a dream. Option A was a failure.
Option B: She was hallucinating vividly.
Although this wasn’t the preferable solution, she preferred it vastly to being stuck in a completely different universe in a house full of strangers. She didn’t even have access to her videogames right now. But being in a hallucinatory state and about to be going to an insane asylum was much better! Right--...Now wait. This option wasn’t even remotely preferable. Besides, she would have stopped by now, right? She doesn’t know a lot about hallucinating, so... so... Uwaaah! No, this couldn’t be right. Why would she even hallucinate about something she had never even seen before?! Option B had to be failure, or her life would really suck. It had to be something else.
Option C: This is a prank.
Who would be rich enough to pull a prank this elaborate. She’d never known anyone like that. She was just a normal high school girl! Who would even kidnap her for something like this? This isn't even Japan!! Where was she anyway? America? How is that even possible?! Uwaaah! Uwaaaaah!! Option C: An immediate failure.
Option D: This is real.
Takane takes a moment to think about this, frowning. In no way can she make this disprove this option. It's either this option or it's B. Neither are at all preferable. But... Isn't this even worse? She can't see anyone she knows ever again? Her grandma? ...Haruka? And she couldn’t even play her video games ever again? There was no way this was real. ...But there was no way to disprove it. She had to face reality. This...this was real.
She really didn’t like this game.
Game over.
Suddenly, the most miserable sound to ever be heard in the history of ever erupted from her lips, and she stood up while holding her head miserably in her hands.
“Uwah, no way...! Uwaaaah!!”
At that moment, Takane truly wished she could just explode into a million pieces and cease to exist.
